Hair Loss in Women

Women tend to have a rather special relationship with their hair, so if you’re female the thought of losing your treasured tresses can be quite horrifying. While it’s rare for women to go completely bald the way men sometimes do, an increasing number are being affected by hair loss these days. In the Western world, an estimated 25-30% of women have problems with thinning or falling hair, and medical specialists report that even girls of 15 or 16 are now seeking help for hair loss.

While the majority of men who lose their hair do so because of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), most cases of hair loss in women arise for different reasons. Those women who do have androgenetic alopecia tend to lose hairs evenly from the scalp, rather than mainly from the temples and crown as their male counterparts do.

Several of the common reasons for female hair loss have a hormonal component:

(1) The Pill can often cause an initial increase in hair growth thanks to the oestrogen (a female sex hormone) it contains. However, many women find themselves losing hair several months later. This is a natural reaction to the oestrogen boost your body receives when you start taking birth control pills, and does resolve itself after a few more months.

(2) Pregnancy also results in heightened oestrogen levels, which is why many expectant mothers have thick, gorgeous hair. After giving birth, a lot of women experience temporary hair loss problems when their hormones start getting back to normal.

(3) Menopause is another female life stage when you lose oestrogen and – often – hair too. Hormone replacement therapy can help prevent this from happening.

(4) Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition where ovulation is disrupted and high levels of testosterone (a male sex hormone) are released. This frequently causes quite serious hair loss. Women with PCOS sometimes experience an overgrowth of body hair instead, however.

Other causes of hair loss in women include:

  • Alopecia areata. This is an autoimmune condition that affects 1-2% of women and causes sudden bald patches 2-3cm across.
  • Anemia, or low iron levels is common among pre-menopausal females, and causes a multitude of problems including hair loss.
  • Stress, anxiety and depression can all literally make your hair fall out.
  • Thyroid disorders – whether it’s overactive or underactive, a faulty thyroid can also cause thinning hair.
